Storing and stacking can indeed be a challenge, especially if you have a large amount of wood, but there are some tips that can help. If buying the wood early in the year (summertime) we suggest storing it in an area where the sun and wind can act to further evaporate any remaining moisture. Closer to the winter, the wood pile should be in location that is protected from rain/snow, i.e. a wood shed or covered area. Tarping can protect the wood, but if the tarp is left on too long, it can also promote the growth of mold and cause the wood to become damp.
With regard to stacking, if building a free-standing stack of firewood, Marysville homeowners should make sure that the sides are as straight as possible. When building the stack, the tendency is for the pile to lean one way or the other. To correct this, as you are building, gently tap the ends of the logs to make sure the sides as vertical as possible. Stacks above waist high can also be propped up on the sides with sticks or poles to minimize the possibility of them falling over. Whether building a free standing pile, or one that is up against a wall or fence, one trick for securing the ends of each stack is to crisscross the wood pieces in alternate layers to form pillars that will add more stability (if you’ve ever played Jenga, you’re probably familiar with this concept!) This should help hold the stack in place. Finally, if possible, build your stack on top of planks or beams to keep the bottom logs elevated off the ground. This will help keep them dry and prevent the growth of mold and fungus.
